Yes, I’d go with Grant’s theory of a recording date of 5th September and a broadcast on the 9th. The big giveaway is listening to Just Like A Woman - as we all know, Van is unlikely to use exactly the same phrasing on a song even a few nights apart, especially on one as ripe for improvisation as this one…but even the audience reactions (whoops etc) are in the same place! The longer 2CD version “Into The Mystic”, is (as you’d expect) also on this fine blog. Whatever, this show is an essential listen.

This is definitely as stated above. I actually bought a copy of this old ‘oil well’ cd in a department store in Madrid back in the 90s. In those days the stores had as many boots as offcial releases!! From memory the stereo FM recording isn’t that great either, one channel is weak.

I’d agree that the content is essential, but this is incomplete and track order is altered.

Thanks for continuing to post the Van and some nice Bob too, I didn’t need the recent ones but I’m loving all the Jerry shows

Hey Mat …..FYI - I downloaded the FLAC and the files are MP3 320. Still an upgrade over the 192 version I had. I love this show. Another MUST have.
You continue to impress with the quality of the shows you are bringing back to life.
    Thanks for all the efforts.
    Peace,
    Ken

Thanks for the discussion folks. Looks like I had the links switched Beatle, but they are fixed now.. Thanks.

While we’re on this subject…. I remember hearing once that this session included a long instrumental called (I think) Caledonian Soul Music - but it never seems to come up in the various issues of this material….
um, any knowledgeable folks out there can clear this up?

This is definitely from Pacific High (not Heights) Studios, San Francisco, on Sept. 5, 1971. The original broadcast is introduced by Tom “Big Daddy” Donahue, a voice that I will never forget. He was broadcasting for KSAN-FM at the time, and this was a KSAN live show. It MAY have been rebroadcast in Sacramento at a later date…occasionally the “underground” FM stations swapped tapes..and there was a station in Sacramento (KZAP) that might have rebroadcast it. “Caledonia Soul Music” was not a part of the original broadcast, but is a studio outtake appended to the Pacific High show.

  • New Repost Policy: With the near constant flux and changes being made by the main file hosting sites I no longer feel any show that I post will be around permanently. Because of this I will no longer be reposting any old show. Once it is gone, it is gone. I am terribly sorry about this, but my time is limited and I simply cannot spend all of it reposting shows.
